Awesome Art of Character Design
Illustrator Workshops with Michael J. White

In celebration of National Humanities Month, in conjunction with gallery exhibition, Art of the Picture Book.
  • October 13th, TWO Options!
  • Ages 10 – adult  (sign up to take one or both sessions)
  • $45 per person (materials provided)

The Fantastic Art of Concept and Character Development, 9:30 am – 12 pm

Making your Concept and Character Art Go to Work, 1:00 – 3:30 pm

Instruction will be unique in each session, so participants can choose both or one to attend. Michael offered the opportunity for parent and child to attend together to develop passion for drawing and cartooning.

Michael J. White started drawing at age 2 and never stopped. Since his graduation from the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, Michael has created board games, interactive DVDs, album and CD covers, magazine covers, editorial illustrations, children's books, coloring books, billboards, posters, T-shirt designs, logos, vehicle wraps, bubble gum cards, and launched a lot of concepts and characters into action. After teaching at the Ringling College of Art for many years, Michael now enjoys freelancing and drawing caricatures. He only has one rule “If it's not fun, I'm not doing it.”

Call for YOUTH ARTISTS: 
​​My Favorite Reimagined Book Character
Open Call for YOUTH ARTISTS dabbling in illustration, cartooning, and character design by artists 5 years to 18. Only one entry per artist. Entry can be a single image but must be 8" x 10" (or 10" x 8") only (see template HERE).

All 2-dimensional media welcomed; for example, crayon, marker, pencil, watercolor, acrylic or tempera paint, and digital design. Each artist application must include payment of a $5 entry fee. Artwork should have the full name of the artist on the back, written in pencil. Entries will be juried upon delivery. Some may be rejected upon entry based on content, size, or quality of presentation. If it does not show an original design of a character, it may not be accepted.

ART DELIVERY: OCTOBER 19 (Alpharetta Arts Center) Be sure to print and clip your application to your art when delivering.
EXHIBITION DATES: OCTOBER 23-DECEMBER 2, 2024 (Community Gallery at City Hall)

Book Signing and Presentation with Shanda McCloskey

​In conjunction with the exhibit at the Alpharetta Arts Center, The Art of the Picture Book, the Alpharetta Library is hosting a book signing and presentation with Shanda McCloskey.  Come meet author and artist, Shanda McCloskey of STEM-friendly books such as Doll-E and T-Bone the Drone. Books will be available for purchase and signings at the Alpharetta Library. The exhibit, hosted by the Southeastern Region of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, will showcase artists original designs from published children’s books.

2 pm – Words + Illustration = Magic!

Come meet some of the artists exhibiting in The Art of the Picture Book at the Alpharetta Arts Center on Saturday, November 2 from 1 – 3 pm.

​Artists will have copies of their books represented in the exhibit available for purchase and signing. Check out the link below to pre-order books.

Pre-ordered books will be delivered to the Arts Center by October 30. Open to public with books available for purchase.
